What’s good, people?
Yesterday, Sony Music reported its Q1 numbers, and they were a blowout.
Their recorded music operation posted $1.34 Billion in revenues in the three months to the end of March this year.
Of the $1.34bn Sony’s recorded music companies generated in calendar Q1, around $863 million – or 64% – came from streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music among others.
Sony’s most successful artist projects in revenue-generating terms in calendar Q1 2021 were, in order:
Harry Styles, Fine Line
The Kid LAROI, F*CK LOVE (Savage)
Foo Fighters, Medicine At Midnight
Doja Cat, Hot Pink
Luke Combs, What You See Is What You Get
Miley Cyrus, Plastic Hearts
Polo G, THE GOAT
Travis Scott, ASTROWORLD
24kGoldn, El Dorado
AC/DC, POWER UP
Elsewhere, Billboard Music announced nominees for the 2021 Billboard Music Awards with The Weeknd leading the pack earning 16 nominations, including top male artist, top R&B artist, top Billboard 200 album for “After Hours” and top Hot 100 song for “Blinding Lights,” the No. 1 song of last year.
But does anyone even care about the Billboard Music Awards?
Viewership has fallen over 62% last year around, and while a lot of it is attributed to the pandemic, it is just that in general award shows are being seen as pompous shows of narcissism in times wherein humanity is facing a tough challenge.
The Oscars, held earlier this week saw its viewership plummet by 58% to its lowest ever recorded, with just 9.8 million people tuning in to see The Academy Awards.
The pandemic seems to have made people re-evaluate the entire point of these award shows altogether. With streaming television becoming the norm, traditional networks such as NBC and ABC have seen ratings dip across categories, and award shows have been no different.
Lastly, Billie Eilish dropped a new single called ‘Your Power’ as part of her second studio album “Happier Than Ever” releasing on 30th July. Check it out here 👇🏻
