What’s good everyone?
It’s a Tuesday, and I remember back in the days of school as Tuesday being one of the most boring of all 😴
It didn’t quite have the in-your-face shock after the weekend of a Monday, and neither was it a stepping stone to the next weekend like a Wednesday. It simply was as mundane as it could be.
Maybe that’s just because, learning in school in itself was pretty dull, and I’m sure I am not the only one who shares this view. Who else does?
Hip-Hop legend and billionaire business mogul Dr.Dre 🔥
Having pioneered gangster rap with his group ‘N.W.A’ in the late 80s, Dre has won 6 Grammy’s and been credited for launching the careers of hip-hop stars like Eminem, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and 50 Cent.
And not only does Dre just acknowledge this problem of the education system, but he is actually trying to solve it.
How exactly? 👇🏻
Dre is planning to build what he calls the ‘Coolest High School’ in America along with fellow co-founder of Beats by Dr.Dre, Jimmy Iovine.
Before I get into their latest venture, let me cap off how insanely successful their previous one- the headphone company ‘Beats by Dre’ was:
🎧 Founded in 2006 to tackle the problem of lack of audio quality in music
🤘🏻Endorsed by the top musicians as the best headphones at the time
📈 > 50% Market Share in Premium Headphones category
🔥 Became a $1 Billion worth company in 2013
🎶 Launched Beats Music- an online streaming service
💰Acquired by Apple for $3 Billion in 2014
Basically, Beats by Dre blew up massively 🚀
After being acquired by Apple in a cash and stock deal, Dre became the first billionaire in Hip-Hop, and Iovine- who was already successful as a recording engineer for rock legends such as John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen, suddenly found himself elevated to another level.
The crazy part?
Dre almost blew the deal off by accidentally revealing details of the billion-dollar takeover on Facebook Live before it was officially announced.
Check out Iovine talking about that weekend right here 👇🏻
About their latest project, the idea is for Dre and Iovine to do and spend whatever it takes to make a school, which will be based in South L.A., successful and sought after, and a place that will motivate students to be critical thinkers, entrepreneurs, and innovators 👨🏻🎓
The move represents a rare investment by the music elite in the nation’s second-largest school system, where more than 80% of students are Latino and Black, and about the same number come from low-income families.
Dre said he wants to reach “the inner-city kid, the younger me.”
“Here’s a place that you can go where there’s something that you can learn that you’re really interested in.”
Iovine explained their vision for the school, which was approved last week by the L.A. Board of Education and is slated to open in fall 2022.
“This is for kids who want to go out and start their own company or go work at a place… like Marvel or Apple or companies like that. Working successfully in these areas means breaking down silos between different jobs and skills — and disrupting familiar patterns with creativity and purpose”
Given their background in music, Iovine was quick to refute any rumors of the school being related to hip-hop or music.
Speaking on his own experiences as a teenager growing up in America, Dre said:
“That guy that didn’t have an opportunity, that had to scratch and figure out things on his own, that had the curiosity but didn’t have these type of opportunities, really smart kids — we want to touch and give them this open door and these opportunities to be able to show what they can do.”
No kid wants to go to school, because it’s boring. You keep flipping the same thing over and over and over again, year after year, with the same curriculum, the same teachers.”
This is something new and different that might excite the kids and make them want to go to school,”
The school will join a relatively short list of education projects initiated by the wealthy from sports or entertainment.
That list includes former Phoenix Suns star Kevin Johnson, who started charter schools in Sacramento, and LeBron James, who catalyzed a new public school in Akron, Ohio.
My take on the latest venture of Dre and Iovine?
Their partnership can never be taken lightly. Whether it is building an industry disruptive billion-dollar company or Grammy-winning platinum hits, these guys mean business 💰
Check out the trailer to their HBO-produced documentary- ‘The Defiant Ones’.
It’s essential viewing for anyone wanting to make it big in business or life in general 👇🏻
Hope this helps motivate you to beat the Tuesday blues, I’ll talk to you guys tomorrow!
